Sport enthusiasts in Skelmorlie are poised to benefit as ambitious plans for a new multi-use games area in the village cleared another hurdle.
North Ayrshire Council's Cabinet has agreed to Skelmorlie Community Sports Club's proposal to secure a long lease of the grounds adjacent to Skelmorlie Primary School.
The lease will allow the club to move forward with its plans to provide all-weather sporting facilities for young people in the area.
Local residents identified the need for greater facilities in Skelmorlie and the sports club has worked extensively with funders to implement its business plan in order to construct a multi-use games area to enhance facilities for sport and physical activities within the village.
As a registered charity, the community sports club has raised just over £215,000 to take forward this project.
At Cabinet last week, a long-term lease of grounds in Innes Park Road, adjacent to Skelmorlie Primary School, was agreed under terms of the community asset transfer arrangements.
Councillor Louise McPhater, Cabinet member for Communities, said: "This allow local communities the chance to develop exciting new opportunities which will have a positive effect on their area.
"Skelmorlie Community Sports Club has become a real focal point for sporting endeavour in the village and are well placed to push forward with their plans.
"The Community Action Plan for Skelmorlie identified a lack of facilities for young people and for sport. Following a period of local consultation, the Skelmorlie Community Sports Club was formed made plans for an outdoor all-weather playing field its number one priority.
"This agreement will now allow the club to move ahead with its proposals and we wish them the very best of luck."
The Skelmorlie Sports Club was set up in response to the ‘Ayrshire 21 – Growing Rural Communities Together’ strategy which encouraged local action across 21 rural communities in Ayrshire.
