The A78 between Hunterston and Ardrossan was closed as heavy flooding submerged the road leading to accidents and leaving drivers stranded for hours in nightmare journeys throughout the district.

Once again, the petrol station at Fairlie was gushing water from around 7.30am as Amey road teams were on the site to try and keep the traffic moving as far as possible, but the road was submerged at Hunterston roundabout and between Seamill and Ardrossan. Huge swathes of countryside were deluged as trains were cancelled throughout the day due to the extreme conditions.

At various points the Largs to Kilbirnie road was barely passable and access to Greenock was cut off.
