AN INNOVATIVE strategy which could see over three million trees planted in the local area has been launched.

The Ayrshire and Arran Forestry and Woodland Strategy has been developed by the Ayrshire Green Network Partnership (AGNP), a joint initiative between Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS), Scottish Natural Heritage, North Ayrshire Council, South Ayrshire Council, and East Ayrshire Council set up to deliver the shared goals and vision of the Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN) with a regional focus to deliver local priorities in the Ayrshire area.

The strategy is intended to guide woodland management and expansion in Ayrshire and Arran to maximise the contribution of woodland and forestry to local people, the environment and the economy of the region.

Councillor Tony Gurney, Cabinet member for Environment and Infrastructure at North Ayrshire Council, said: “This is a fantastic initiative that will not only support and nurture the local environment but, by creating jobs, boost the local economy.

“There is great scope across Ayrshire to develop our woodland and forestry areas. The Ayrshire and Arran Forestry and Woodland Strategy will be crucial in moving this forward.

“This is very exciting to be part of and we look forward to working alongside our neighbouring local authorities. With the support and expertise of Ayrshire Green Network Partnership (AGNP) we are confident we will deliver some exciting results and create a lasting legacy for our communities in North Ayrshire.” * Stakis Forestry have plans for a major commercial woodland development in the hills behind Largs.
