Readers voiced strong support for anti-dog poo campaigners who are attempting to rid Portencross of the problem.

We reported last week that resident Audrey Kolon had highlighted all the areas of dog poo with ‘flags’, installing canes in the areas affected, with poo bags flying from the top.

On the ‘News’ Facebook page, Alison Lavington said: “It happens around our house too in Portencross. Daily a man drives into our road, let’s his dog out to poo along the verge then drives off. My son plays along there.” Different districts have also been affected by the menace. Eunice Campbell said: “Wemyss Bay is exactly the same! I know that there are loads of responsible dog owners but there are plenty of others who have absolutely no regard for others. It makes me so mad!” Hilary Moran said: “Just this week in Largs People facebook page there have been lots of compaints. Some of us contacted the community wardens and they are now in Largs four days a week, putting up notices and asking for places that they should be looking for problem fouling. They have actually fined someone too. We feel we have been successful. You can phone 01294 314690 for the community wardens service.” Penny Copeland said: “It’s disgusting! I may adopt this technique in Pier Road in Fairlie. Someone is using the grassy areas there as a canine latrine. Absolutely repulsive irresponsibility.” Johanne Watson added: “Millport just as bad. If they put sticks at every dog’s mess owners here didn’t pick up that’s all you would be able to see.” West Kilbride resident Heather Cameron said: “I understand the anger at this but I feel I have to point out the following example. Where I live, one dog walker did not pick up the mess and I noticed that in the space of just one week there were seven dog poos over a distance of about 100 yards all of which he alone left lying. Anyone walking along there would assume that most dog walkers are just not bothering. This is not true!

“I would say that an average of 50 people a day walk that route with dogs and all apart from this one guy picks up after them. Remember a dog poo does not disappear overnight and where you may see lots of it about its probably the daily ‘doings’ of the same dog and same irresponsible owner.” And Michelle MccAlmont wanted to take a harder line on the problem: “West Kilbride is covered in it! I get so mad. You need to constantly watch where you are walking and pushing a pram. These people shouldn’t have dogs if they can’t clean up after them.” The West Kilbride Community campaign against dog dirt holds regular meetings in the community centre.
