A local family are delighted after their two year old boy Adam, who suffers from a rare brain condition, scooped the top votes in the 'News' Bonnie Babes contest.
The family of little Adam Rafferty won £300 through the competition, and all the prize money is going to charity, equally split between Epilepsy Scotland and Yorkhill Hospital, both of who have greatly assisted Adam.
The youngster suffers from the rare STURGE Weber syndrome, which includes epilepsy, and development delay. He has already attended the world famous Great Ormond Street hospital three times this year, and the family would like to raise awareness of the illness.
Adam is well known in Largs, and the family live in Wemyss Bay, with Adam's grandparents Susan and John Harkins running the Bake n Bite shop in Moorburn Road.
Adam also has a birthmark over his face, eye and scalp - his condition is very rare, and 1 in 50,000 babies are born with the illness.
Mum Wendy Harkins, said: "Adam goes to Great Ormond Street which is where all the children in the UK and Europe with the condition go to, and he is being assessed for surgery - they are lookign at removing half of the brain to stop the seizures.
"They remove the half that the seizures are coming from - doctors remove it to allow the other part of the brain to take over and develop.
"It has been done before - and there is a new surgery in place where the doctors won't remove it, but turn off the nerves which are causing the damage, but Adam is still getting assessed. He is getting another MRI in January and then we are waiting on the team from Great Ormond Street in March whether he is going to be a candidate or not."
The operation for the crucial surgery would last between 5-8 hours.
Wendy said: "Adam also goes to Yorkhill for all sorts of tests, and he is also at risk of glaucoma. Our son is two years and three months old, but he has developed to a one year old, and attends a specialist nursery."
"Adam is well known in Largs, and it was such a great surprise for him to win the Bonnie Babes competition - we were so chuffed, and are over the moon!
"I used to work in the Bake N Bite, and everyone knows him in there, so it is great to have won the Largs and Millport News competition in time for Christmas."
Wendy had to give up her job when Adam was born, in order to provide around the clock care.
Adam has been having seizures since he was seven months old, and at one particular point, suffered seizures up to ten times a day.
"They have now settled," said Wendy, "He has one big seizure every six weeks or so. We have to carry Adam's medication in a bag with us, wherever we go."
Adam loves watching tv, eating, and soft play, and is a very active young boy.
Dad Andrew Rafferty is a store manager for Lidl, and the family live in Kilchattan Place, Wemyss Bay.
Indeed, the family will be spending Christmas in Wemyss Bay, and Adam will also be getting visits from Andrew's mum and dad, Sam and Michelle, Andrew's sisters Bethany and Amy, and Wendy's brother John - all of whom live in Wemyss Bay.
