West Kilbride lived up to its name as one of the UFO capitals of Scotland after a mysterious display of flashing lights in triangular and circular formations in the night sky.

Witnesses have spoken to the "News" about their astonishment at the surreal sightings which occurred on Sunday August 2 between 10-10.30pm in a case which could come right out of "The X Files".

One elderly couple in Fullarton Drive gathered in their loft and were amazed to see the lights form into the shape of a circle before vanishing without trace, and contacted the police regarding the situation.

Eye-witness Marion Neill, 40, admitted that she was gobsmacked at the unidentified flying objects.

She said: "It was weird. I was in the Main Street just outside the Key Store at bang on 10pm and my friend's son, Jack, was also in the area, with his friend. They couldn't believe it either. We both saw these amazing light formations. There were changing in colour from orange to white and alternating between these colours.

"It was like a 4-4-2-2-1 formation like a triangle when they flew over before they went out of sight and we went running up the Main Street but just saw the last light before it moved into the distance. They were evenly spaced out.

"There was no noise, and they definitely were not planes or falling stars. It lasted for around ten minutes. It was unbelievable." Marion, who is a housekeeper at the Seamill Hydro, said: "I was at the hairdressers Trim U in West Kilbride a couple of days later and another woman said she saw a similar thing. She watched from her attic window with her husband and said that she saw the lights form a circle in the sky." The resident in Fullarton Drive in West Kilbride, who did not want to be named, said: "My wife told me to come quickly. I saw two lights, I don't know what they were, they were much bigger than a star. They were not as big as moon and they were red. One was quite low on horizon towards Turnberry or towards Prestwick other one drifting quite fast on the wind. It was dark and about half past ten at night and I was looking at it. 'Don't go out, don't go out" said my wife.

"There was a breeze blowing on the wind; it was difficult to tell how things move at night time. It just disappeared. We were puzzled it made no noise absolutely silent." Full story in the Largs and Millport Weekly News.
