West Kilbride butcher Charles Donaldson is delighted that his giant haggis was a hit at the Scottish Spina Bifida Association (SSBA).

The giant 5.5 kilo (12lbs in old money) delicacy, provided by J.Climie’s butchers in Main Street, West Kilbride, was put up for donations at the Charity’s annual Burns Supper in Glasgow.

And the guests were so impressed with the huge haggis they just kept on pledging money to the SSBA.

The organiser of the event, SSBA’s Clare Cogan Turner, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thanks everyone at J Climie in West Kilbride, not only for supplying this mammoth, mouth-watering monster, but also for delivering it straight to the event as part of their new delivery service for all their customers.” She continued, “The whole event raised £20,000, which is just part of the £1 million we need to raise every year to provide specialist support for over 3,500 children, young adults and families in Scotland who face the challenging and lifelong condition of spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus of which there is no known cure”.

Clinical Geneticist, Dr Margo Whiteford, Chair of the SSBA, and President of the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, who was born with spina bifida, said: “Spina bifida, is one the most common, severe, neural tube birth defects and the prevalence of the condition in Scotland is one of the highest in Europe.” Charles, master butcher of J.Climie’s, added, “We are proud to support Scotland’s oldest self-funding charity and hope we have encouraged Largs and Millport readers to do the same.” For further information on how you can help or make a donation simply call 01236 794508 or log onto www.ssba.org.uk”
