The Largs branch of The Royal British Legion Scotland are inviting people to attend a special VE Day commemoration service on Sunday 10 May.

The legion will be hosting a parade starting at Crawford Street in Largs at 11am, followed by a church service at St. Columba’s Parish Church at 11.30. Largs Boys Brigade will also be taking part.

A service will then take place at Largs War Memorial at 1pm.

Lynda Chinery, publicity officer for the LegionScotland (Largs) said: “We are joining national VE day celebrations and services across Scotland marking the 70th anniversary of VE Day on 10 May.

“The date marks the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany’s armed forces, the end of World War Two and celebrations in the streets, towns and villages throughout Scotland and the world.

“A special parade and thanksgiving service is to be held in Largs, followed by a tribute in memory and in honour at the war memorial to the 67 servicemen and women from Largs who died in World War Two, all of whom are listed on the war memorial, and inclusive of the 17 buried in Largs cemetery.

“In Largs branch of Legion Scotland, we are proud to have Jack Ransom, a World War Two surviving veteran, as an active member. Members of the public who wish to pay tribute at this service will be warmly welcomed.” Events are taking place across the UK to mark the 70th anniversary including a service of thanksgiving and a star-studded concert in central London, headlined by Status Quo, as well as street parties around the UK.

The Royal British Legion, as the national custodian of Remembrance, will act as the government’s key partner in leading the nation in marking the commemoration.
