No Poo on Shoe Public Meeting

The successful 'No Poo on My Shoe' campaign group of young mums held a public meeting at Nixon"s Hotel last summer.

It is the first time the local committee have met the public to discuss future projects and ideas for the campaign to rid dog dirt from our local streets.

Organiser Maureen Muir told the "News" the No Dog Poo on My Shoe campaign had resulted in cleaner streets but said that it was important to carry on heeding the advice now that tourists were arriving in Largs during the hot sunshine weather.

Local politicians and groups such as the Opportunities in Retirement were invited to Tuesday"s meeting and the local group are hoping for some more footsoldiers to join their campaign. The public will be able to ask questions and provide opinions.

Maureen said: 'We want to tell the public what we have been doing so far and what we have planned for the future. We have been very involved with schools so far and we are about to introduce our residential scheme. We have had great support so far and we would also like to say thank you to everyone who has helped us. We want the streets to look as good as possible especially we now have the nice summer weather. We will also be very busy over the summer months and we are hoping to have a float at the forthcoming Brisbane Queen parade.'

Plans for the No Poo on My Shoe campaign include a song to be sung by local schoolchildren, a poster campaign and providing residential schemes around Largs to promote cleaner streets and cleaning up after your dog.

The successful exploits of the environmental pressure group has reached other places with Wemyss Bay and Ardrossan enquiring for details about the campaign which was launched in February. School pupils have helped in designing logos in a competition for the "No Poo on My Shoe" group and have attracted cross-party support from local politicians and the public at large. Disposal bags are available at the Largs and Millport Weekly News office, Oaks vet surgery, Largs police station and the local library.

The Largs and Millport Weekly News has backed the campaign from the start when we printed the opinions of one young mum who was disgusted as dogs dirt on our streets and said you would not throw dirty nappies on to the street, and said it was crucial for good health that dog owners cleared up after their pets.
