Thistle assistant boss ‘Arnie’ has urged his side to get early goals to demoralise the opposition after Saturday’s stalemate against Bellshill.
Largs, who are at home to 6th placed Yoker this weekend, are now unbeaten in 14 league games, and the launchpad which set Thistle on that journey was a 3-1 win against Yoker in April.
Arnie said: “It is all guns blazing going forward - the next two games are Yoker and Greenock - and if we want to be challenging at the top, these are the games we have to win. There are a lot of hard games coming up over the next couple of months. We are making chances, but we need to convert them, and try and see if we can stay at this top end of the table.
“We are great believers in how you start the game, get in your opponent’s face, and win the battle early doors, get the early goal, but the longer the game goes 0-0, you are giving them a wee bit of light, and the other team think they have a chance, and in the end up on Saturday, it became quite desperate.
“I think over the game we did deserve to get the three points but I keep saying to the team if you don’t start well enough, you are giving yourself a hard task."
Asked about the red card for Nicky Jamieson, Arnie responded: “ I don’t want to say too much as the boy did a lot of rolling about - and I think the referee actually believed that the boy’s leg was broken, the way his reaction was, and maybe that prompted him to get the red card out, but the boy got up after the sending off. It was a tackle from the back, but I don’t think it was a red card.”
“I spoke to the boys before the game about our stats - before the game, we were averaging 2.5 goals a game, and we have only conceded two games in the league, but with all these chances, we have to go and win the game. From a defensive point of view, it is good that we did not concede, but we have to take our chances.
“Don’t get me wrong - we had a few very good chances, and a few blocks on the line, some from our own players. Maybe luck was not going for us, but you earn your own luck, and when you are challenging at the top, that is when you have to go that extra mile and get that win. It is disappointing, but the position we were in last year compared to now, we have moved on, but we need to pick ourselves up - it is a home game, and it has to be three points, and that is what everyone is looking for - the management, the players, committee, and fans.”
Captain Kevin Struthers said: “It is not acceptable now to be drawing with a team lowest in the league. I woke up on Sunday, and it felt like a defeat - the expectation has totally changed at the club.
“We have set standards so high - this time last year we were down at the bottom and struggling, and doing anything for a win. We are now devastated drawing a game at home - it is a total change in mentality.
“Yoker are always a hard team to play and every time it is tough - they always have good individuals. We are now one of the fittest teams in the league - everyone is looking fit and sharp everyone sitting liked coil springs waiting to come on, and we want to make Barrfields a hard place to come. The Yoker game is a great opportunity for us.”
