Largs AFC 4-0 Beith

Largs AFC progressed to the Donsport Trophy quarter-final with a convincing win.

Largs took the game to their opponents in the early stages, seeking to get Cameron and Hill one-on-one with their respective full backs, and it was from one such move that the home side took the lead. Some clever play from Cockerill released Cameron down the right channel, who cut the ball across the box for Hill, who finished from close range having got in front of his marker.

Cameron should have doubled Largs’ lead when he was sent clean through on goal, but his lobbed finish dropped just over the cross bar. The wide man made amends shortly afterwards though, when Dunlop hooked a right-foot pass over the back line and Cameron, again, found Hill who slammed home from close range to double his tally and Largs’ lead.

The third goal of the afternoon came from a familiar source. Almost straight from kick-off, Cameron, who caused problems for Beith all afternoon, again found space down the right flank, this time it was Cockerill who met his precise cut-back, with the veteran finishing high into the net from five yards out.

With their place in the quarter-finals looking secure, McGowan introduced some fresh legs. Riddell, who performed solidly, was replaced at right back by fellow youngster Ben Connor, while Seamus Mackie replaced Cockerill upfront.

The fourth and final goal of the match arrived when Russell latched on to a through ball from McGowan. The midfielder looked to have taken the ball too far wide but he produced a superb finish from a tight angle, having skipped by the ‘keeper. With his work done, Russell was replaced in the middle of the park by Chris McMillan. A further change from Largs saw Gordon Wilson replace Hill. All the substitutes played their part in ensuring Largs saw out the remainder of the match comfortably and the final whistle brought to an end a fine afternoon’s work for the home side.

Largs will be looking to extend their cup run and will take confidence from recent performances, which have seen the local side lose only once since the start of October.

Largs would like to thank JG Sharps for their continued sponsorship, support and post-match hospitality.
