Largs Thistle and Tesco got together for a unique football match to raise funds for the local lifeboat.

The final scoreline was 17-1 to the Largs Thistle select but the match was far more than just about football.

The fundraiser was arranged by Mrs. Pat McSween, the Community Champion at Tesco Largs. She wanted to do something for the RNLI because she is related to one of the crew of the tragic ill-fated Longhope lifeboat.

This particular vessel was launched from Hoy in March 1969 to assist a stricken Liberian cargo ship which reported in difficulty adrift in a force 9 gale. But it capsized and all eight crew members lost their lives, including three from one family. Her own relative was only 19 years old.

Local fundraising spokeswoman for the RNLI, Cathy Holgate said: "The ship, Irene, was nearer to land than had been anticipated when the alarm was raised and all its 17 crew were brought ashore safely.

"This is a sad tragic story that is well known in lifeboat history and started the quest to build self-righting lifeboats and reminds us all of the risks that the volunteer crew take."

The football match raised just over £300 which Tesco and the RNLI are delighted about.
