Thistle legend George Wall's weekly column...

Given the state Rangers are in at the moment, it is good news for all their supporters that they have signed up Steven Gerrard as manager.
I don't see anything wrong with the appointment.
He has been an under 18s coach with Liverpool, and he has got to come and get experience somewhere, and some have said he should perhaps have gone to some team in England.
But why? It is a great opportunity for him to cut his teeth at Ibrox.
Steven is a Champions League winner, and he can stamp his authority and mentality across the club.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:
It is good news for Scottish football as well as it will raise our game's profile - he is a big name and should be able to attract some high calibre players to Ibrox.
Steven has got the mentality to be ambitious; the last thing he will want is to fail at Rangers.
He will want to be a success - but what is deemed a success though?
Stopping ten in a row, winning the Scottish Cup? Can he realistically stop Celtic?
I think the way things are now you have got to wait and see.
You can't say yes he will stop Celtic, as based on the evidence of the recent Old Firm game. Celtic were absolutely dominant from the start whereas Rangers were nowhere to be seen.
I think it has become a mental barrier now with Rangers against Celtic - and the players don't have the mentality to out and play against Celtic with a 60,000 supporters roaring at them. Rangers used to thrive in that kind of pressure-cooker atmosphere in the past.
If Brendan Rodgers had gone to Arsenal, and he suddenly recommended Steven Gerrard for the Celtic position, I am sure their fans would have been cock-a-hoop.
I always admired Steven's energy as a player, he never ever gave up, and his passing ability was second to none.
It takes me back to another former Rangers-Liverpool connection in Graeme Souness when he came to Ibrox in the 1980s.
There is a parallel there, although Graeme came as player-manager. It was a surprise that Souness came as he suddenly just appeared at a press conference at Ibrox as manager and that was it.
Nobody knew about it and the deal was done whereas the Gerrard story dragged on before he was unveiled last Friday, but I am glad it is now done and dusted. It has generated plenty of interest already from both sides of the border, and that can only be good for Scottish football.
People have also made the John Barnes connection, but you have to give Steven Gerrard a chance. He has got that dedication, he will be ambitious, and will want to be a winner, and will have the respect of the players because of his achievements.
I am looking forward to it.
