Largs Thistle 4 Darvel 0
Some top quality finishing from top scorer Scott Adam put Thistle on course for the semi finals of the Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup for the first time since 2013.
Second half goals from Martin Orr and Nicky Jamieson put the icing on the cake as Largs put on a real show for the supporters in what could be their last game at Barrfields this season.
Given both teams were involved in a 3-3 tussle at Barrfields earlier in the season, it was a measure of how far Largs have progressed that they ran out comfortable winners here, and could have won by more.
However, that is in no way to belittle Darvel who were certainly dangerous on the counter, with chances in both halves, and they have proved to be stubborn opposition for many teams in the McBookie.com Super 1st Division this season. They are certainly no pushovers.
In the early moments, right midfielder Ryan McKie was chopped down on the edge of the box and Alex McWaters dangerous free kick had to be cleared.
Adam got his head on to a fast paced corner as he powered an effort over the bar in the early stages. The big striker also got on the end of a delicate Iain Fisher chip into the box on the right hand side, and launched in an angled half volley which was well stopped by keeper John McWilliam.
Graham Muir had to come on to replace the injured Alan Gilbride for Largs, who will be hoping that the centre half is ok, with Creag Little already ruled out for the remainder of the season with a fractured ankle.
Darvel showed they were dangerous from distance with Greg Vernon's dipping 20 yard volley testing Largs keeper Blair Cousar who made a solid save.
And on 23 minutes, they came close to scoring as Jordyn Ryan's high curling effort had to be well plucked out of the air by Cousar.
Largs opened the scoring on 32 minutes and it was a superb team move as Gary Fleming teed up Scott Adam racing on through on the right.
After a clever 1-2 with McWaters, Adam delivered an unstoppable drive into the net on the angle.
Laurie McMaster somehow volleyed over the bar with the goal at his mercy during another lightning fast Thistle attack on 37 minutes as Largs rallied.
But the second goal duly arrived on 42 minutes and it was another brilliant move as Jamie Campbell did well to release the ball to McWaters down the left and his fast paced ball low into the box was superbly flicked home by Adam for a really classy strike to provide an important cushion against a Darvel side who looked capable on the break.
And Thistle nearly made it three before the break as Adam launched a header which flashed wide of the post after a swirling free kick from McWaters.
Darvel's cause was not helped by a sending off to Greg Vernon following back-chat to the referee midway through the second half.
But Thistle were hungry for more goals and move three up on 77 minutes after another quick passing move down the left hand side.
McMaster took the ball on the run before teeing up Jamie Campbell who turned his man inside out before pulling the ball back for the onrushing Martin Orr at the edge of the area who drilled the ball low into the net for another spectacular finish.
Adam came close to making it his hat-trick as he headed narrowly wide from another powerful cross, while sub John Carter, who came in for McWaters, was also making a nuisance of himself with some great running to tee up Adam whose powerful shot was well saved.
Darvel were wilting in the sunshine and it was no surprise that Largs rubberstamped their victory with a fourth goal on 84 minutes as Ryan McKie's looping corner from the left was headed on by Nicky Jamieson and it seemed to catch the defence off guard as the shot somehow ended up evading any touches before landing up in the back of the net.
This was a thoroughly professional display by Largs who can now look forward to a semi-final at Kilbirnie on Wednesday at 7.30pm kick-off at Valefield Park, and encouragingly, with two crucial league games still to go, Stuart Davidson's side are hitting top form at the right time.
