Ayrshire Weekly Press semi-final
Kilbirnie Ladeside 0 Largs Thistle 0
(Largs Thistle win 4-2 on penalties)
Have a good look at the score above as how it remained goal-less throughout the 90 minutes will remain a mystery for as long as there are glorious sunsets over the Clyde, and seagulls roaming Largs Prom.
Thistle did everything but score in this local derby thriller, hitting the woodwork in both halves, forcing the Ladeside keeper into a number of stunning saves, and also having a strong claim for a penalty kick.
However Kilbirnie refused to buckle and their ex-Morton striker Jon Scullion was denied in the final seconds after a superb block by Largs keeper Blair Cousar which would have been an unjust fate after Largs put so much into the 90.
Fortunately, the penalty shoot-out, so often a lottery in a match, had a decisive outcome thanks to the efforts of Cousar again who proved himself the hero of the occasion with two brilliant stops, while Alec McWaters, Kevin Struthers, John Carter, Martin Orr converted from the spot for the visitors.
Thistle are gunning for their fourth Ayrshire Cup trophy after victories in 1923, 1959 and 2013.
