Largs Thistle boss Stuart Davidson has praised his players for a fantastic season and said he was really proud of their efforts in last Saturday's cup final showdown with Kilwinning.
The Barrfields men narrowly lost out 1-0 to Premiership Buffs, but Largs could hold their head high after pressing Kilwinning right to the very end of the encounter, and having a goal chopped off, and a strong penalty claim turned down.
Davidson said: "It is always disappointing to lose a cup final, and even today I am looking back and thinking what we could have done better to help us win.
"Last week was a real high, and this was a low, but the players really don't deserve that after a fantastic season and they need to remember how well they have played and put Saturday behind them.
"The main achievement of securing promotion has been key to the season - and we put in a lot of effort against Kilwinning and nearly took the game to penalties but it wasn't to be."
Reflecting on the game, the boss believes Largs did not give a true reflection of themselves in the first half.
He said: "I thought we could have done better from a defensive and an attacking point of view, but we were up against a good team, and I thought we showed a good reaction in the second half, and gave it our all."
The gaffer also felt that some key refereeing decisions didn't go the club's way, saying he has watched the video footage of Nicky Jamieson's goal which was chopped off in the final ten minutes, and still didn't understand why it had been ruled out.
"We maybe could have had a penalty as well when Laurie went down in the box. One of the Kilwinning players had three goes at Laurie, and then when Laurie has the one foul he is booked. There is nothing you can do about it, and in fairness to the players, they just buckled down and got on with it.
"It is all ifs and buts but we need to remember what we have achieved this season and look forward to getting back for next season.
"At the end of the day, I am really proud of all the players for all the effort they put into the game."
Asked about the lack of shots on target throughout the 90 minutes, which has certainly gone against the grain after recent league and cup performances, Davidson said: "That was a disappointing aspect. We have been making a lot of chances in recent weeks.
"I think Kilwinning netted early and set their stall out to be defensive; I couldn't pinpoint a right reason for that.
"The players know themselves that they could have done a bit better from an attacking point of view, but up against a team who were challenging for the Premier title this season, I couldn't really fault them."
Largs Thistle now know that they will be joined by Irvine Meadow in the Premier Division after they overcame Arthurlie in the first of the promotion/relegation play-offs, and Troon who overcame Girvan on Wednesday evening to determine the final Premier spot.
