Valspar 1 Largs Thistle U16s 2

Largs under 16s took the win streak to seven with a hard fought, yet comfortable win away to Valspar at the King George V parks in Ayr.

Thistle took the lead after 20 minutes when a misunderstanding between the Valspar centre back and the goalkeeper allowed David Griffins to muscle his way in and calmly slot the ball home from an acute angle.

Largs had looked in control of the game during the half but conceded 5 minutes before half time when a corner from the Valspar right was headed home from 10 yards.

Not to be out done, Largs then increased the tempo with Griffins and Lee McShane closing the oppositions right back down to win the ball back. McShane then sent Griffins into the penalty box where he was up ended as he prepared to shoot. The referee had no option but to award the penalty.

Skipper, Cammy Florence, took the responsibility from the spot and left the keeper floundering as he dispatched the penalty into the roof of the net.

The Thistle midfield were dominant with Reece Allen commanding the centre of the park, and Griffins and Robert Jack giving the Valspar defence no end of problems.

Substitute Jordan Mauchlen had to be substituted himself when Allen took out everything in his path with one challenge, even his team mate.

Largs went looking for the third goal which would have ended the contest and almost got it midway through the second half, when free-kick specialist Cameron Ferguson, looking for his third in two games, thundered a 30 yard free kick against the crossbar.

Valspar then went route one, trying to force an equaliser but Florence and Danny Herrero- Redden repelled everything they could throw at them and saw the game out.
