Largs Spartan Colts 2001’s 12 Barleith Boys Club 2001’s 0 From playing the team at the top of the league the boys’ next game was the total opposite against the bottom team. It was a totally one sided affair from start to finish with all the play in the opposition half. Spartans gave their two goalies a half each but they got about five touches between them all game. It was 3-0 at half time although it could have been so much more. Largs took their chances better in the second half by scoring another nine goals. The goalscorers were McGinty 5, Docherty 2, and one apiece for Bainbridge, Stewart, Fraser, Robson & Mills.

Team – Kane, Reid, Bone, Robson, McShane, Stewart, Cormack, Docherty, Bainbridge, Mills, McGinty, Allen, Fox, Fraser & Clive.

Crosshouse Athletic BC 2001 6 Largs Spartan Colts 2001’s 1 This was the real test for the 2001’s, playing the team at the top of the league on their home park last Wednesday. Again with the conditions very breezy, Largs played into the wind for the first half.

After adjusting to the home keeper’s monster kick-outs Largs possibly started the stronger. McGinty, working hard, got into a couple of shooting positions but into the strong wind just couldn’t get the power needed on his shots to score.

However, Crosshouse were always dangerous and it was no real surprise when they took the lead after some continued pressure. They got another to make it two.

Stewart had the Spartans best chance in the half after being put through by McGinty, got the shot past the keeper but again there was not enough of a connection to take it over the line and the Crosshouse defender managed to clear.

However 2-0 down at half time was respectable. With the wind at their backs Largs were confident of getting something out of this game. It didn’t happen. Crosshouse showed why they are top and the game was all but over in 10 minutes, after some fine play it was another three goals lost and 5-0 to the home team.

The heads didn’t go down though and the boys kept fighting, Bone, Cormack & Docherty especially putting in a hard shift on the right. McGinty did get on the scoresheet with a great free kick. Stewart had a header, from a McGinty cross, that wasn’t far over but that was all the real chances created. Crosshouse got another one to close out the game 6-1.

Spartans were beaten by the better team on the night and it would be a big surprise if Crosshouse don’t go on to win the league. Interestingly though, when you see the 16 boys on the home team sheet, only 3 are from Crosshouse.

Team – Kane, Reid, Bone, Robson, McShane, Fraser, Cormack, Docherty, Bainbridge, Stewart, McGinty, Allen, Fox & Clive.
