For the first time at the Barrfields 3G park, the Old Firm locked swords in a legends match during a recent Sunday afternoon for charity.

A number of football celebrities appeared including Frank McGarvey, Frank McAvennie, Andy Goram, Charlie Miller, and John McDonald.

A good crowd turned up at Barrfields as locals got the opportunity to play with their Rangers and Celtic boyhood heroes, and there were also mascot opportunities for local youngsters on a fun day out.

The opening goal on the day was scored by Jamie McCallum against ‘The Goalie’ Andy Goram to put Celtic 1-0 up. Rangers bounced back though and went 2-1 up courtesy of a strike by Largs Thistle fan Kyle Murray.

It was an exciting game with plenty of goalscoring opportunities for both sides, and a few full bloodied tackles were flying in as the referee had to step in on occasions and issued some yellow cards.

One of the best moves of the game came from ex-Gers midfielder Charlie Miller with a curling pass from the right wing with the outside of his right foot which went straight into the path of an accompanying striker who finished off in style. Rangers ended up hitting the woodwork five times, before running out 6-4 winners in the end.

The blues were 5-2 up at one point and appeared to be cruising, but Celtic pegged things back to make it 5-4, providing an exciting finale. Rangers manager for the day, Donald Reid, was delighted to get the result, and was heard to say at the end of the game: “That’s me still got a 100% winning record!” You can see highlights of the game on the Largs and Millport News Facebook page.

Other locals who performed on the day included Scott Lindsay, the father of Thistle striker Euan, who donned the Rangers strip, while Thistle Vice President Martin Phillips was wearing the hoops, as was Rory McGinty. Lots of money was raised for disabled and disadvantaged children on the day with various sponsorship opportunities. A presentation took place after the game at J G Sharp’s bar in Nelson Street, Largs.
