Neilston 0 Largs Thistle 0 Thistle dominated this match for long spells last Wednesday but could not turn their possession into goals.

Before the game, Largs were sitting second bottom, and hoping to overhaul the Renfrewshire men, one point ahead, but were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.

It was a tense opening with few chances for either side. There were early shouts for a penalty as Largs skipper Kevin Struthers tumbled in the box, On 40 minutes, James Marks had good turn on the edge of the box and rapid shot was palmed away by Neilston keeper Digney at full stretch, but as the Largs players raced in for a rebound, the ref awarded a foul against Thistle.

Marks went even closer on 44 minutes as a rocket volley from the edge of the box rebounded off the left post and away to safety, as Neilston went in at half-time fortunate to be on level terms.

Largs cranked up the pressure and were seemingly encamped in the Neilston box for the opening 25 minutes of the second half.

Special credit to Stephen Connick, who was relatively untroubled during the game, but answered the call as regular keeper Ross Lunday was suspended. The 40 year old made some crucial interceptions, and received a shut-out, in a match which may well be his last ever for Thistle.

The full-time whistle was sounded as Neilston stay one point ahead of their relegation rivals, and with four teams going down, a point really didn’t do anyone any good in the end.

Largs have an Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup match on Saturday at home to Beith, but will have an eye on their must win league encounter against Ardeer on Monday, 7pm kick-off at Barrfields.
