Largs Thistle 6 Ardeer Thistle 2 Goals galore, and haphazard defending, made for an exciting encounter in the spring chill on Monday evening at Barrfields Park.

It was a rusty start for Thistle, as Ardeer made the early running, and Munro was cursing his luck as his third chance of the game, a lob over keeper Ross Lundy, should have been on target, but fortunately drifted wide on 15 minutes.

Ardeer were having more forays into the Largs box, as a high ball found Munro whose volley had to be stopped by Lundy, who was the busier keeper in the early stages.

Largs, at last, got into some rhythm around the half hour mark, as Glenn Thomson fired over, and Mark Murray failed to connect with Struthers' swirling cross to the left post. A curling blast from James Marks, after good work from Struthers on the left, resulted in keeper Paul McCann making a good diving parry to his left.

The goal finally came as Willie McClure turned and twisted his way past defenders on the left, reached the byeline and drilled over a low cross which was turned home by Graham Muir on 38 minutes.

Thistle doubled the lead two minutes later as Nicky Jamieson was quickest to react in the box after a corner kick and slammed the ball high into the net from six yards. Largs nearly made it three before half-time as Thompson's diagonal piledriver was beaten away by McCann and Fisher sent the rebound over the bar.

Struthers was again the architect as he cued up Thomson who slammed home from 12 yards to make it 3-0 after 48 minutes.

And it was a fab four for Largs as Creag Little tapped home from Thomson's low cross after Struthers' initial shot was blocked by ex-Kilbirnie keeper McCann.

An Ardeer sub missed a gilt-edged opportunity before reducing the deficit to 4-1 as he broke clear again, and then hit the left side-netting, as Ardeer were creditably making a fight of it.

Largs restored their four goal advantage as Jamieson outjumped defenders to head home after a high ball into the box from Struthers on 62 minutes.

But Ardeer were continuing to cause the Largs backline problems with their pace, and Reid finished off a quick counter down the left on 75 minutes.

Alan Frizzell, Sean Pierce, and Euan Lindsay replaced Marks, Struthers, and Jamie McDonald, and added some extra zip in the final moments.

Frizzell connected well with McClure's turn and cross, but McCann somehow flipped the effort over the bar, in what seemed a certain sixth for Thistle.

And Munro was sent crashing in the box as Ardeer won a penalty which was sent wide of the right post on 86 minutes.

But Frizzell capped off the goalfest with the best of the lot as he galloped forward down the left wing, cut inside, and sent a bullet of a shot into the bottom right corner of the net at 8.47pm - on 89 minutes.

When Largs hit their stride, they looked capable of scoring at will, but have defended better, and were too vulnerable at times. However, given it was their second game in three days, the side deserve some slack. and hopefully can carry on their goalscoring exploits, but need to be tighter at the back with four games left to save their season.
