Largs Thistle forward Gary Phillips might only be at the Barrfields club for a short spell, but the management of Bryan Slavin and Arnie are very keen to sign the skillful winger who has bags of natural talent.

The 27 year old found himself without a club after being released by Albion Rovers, and has returned to Largs as a trialist, but can only play three games before needing to officially sign up.

Coming off the bench against Shotts, he curled in a magnificent cross to set up James Marks winning goal.

Gary was also instrumental in Albion Rovers’ historic run to the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup two years ago, scoring against Motherwell, during an unforgettable cup run - Albion’s best in 80 years!

He said: “It has been an eventful couple of years, and everybody at Rovers treated me well - I really enjoyed the step up to senior, and it is a challenge to play at the highest level that you can.” The highlight of Albion’s cup run was a 1-1 draw against Rangers at Ibrox in the quarter final, before the underdogs succumbed in a replay, but Gary feels that they had a chance to record a historic cup upset that day.

Gary, who is a personal trainer from Erskine, moved to Largs from Auchinleck in January 2010, the year when Largs reached the Scottish Cup final, but was cup-tied, and unable to feature in the dramatic run to Rugby Park where Largs narrowly lost out 1-0.

“I had many personal highlights from my first spell at Thistle, including my first game against Talbot and managed to score against them. I also went through a couple of hardships, and I broke my foot and missed the season for 12 weeks. My biggest memory was getting my freedom back at Largs, as I had not been playing regularly, and I enjoyed getting back and playing again, and enjoying my time at football.” Time will tell whether Gary’s second spell at Largs will be as fruitful, and has been offered a contract.

Gary said: “My dad David never misses a game, and my mum Norma also came along to the Shotts game - it is nice to be able to come and help out. All the fans, committte and board at Largs Thistle are very welcoming to me, and I have always enjoyed my time at Largs.”
