Revolutionary changes to the West of Scotland junior leagues affecting Largs Thistle could be introduced in season 2018/19.

Among the proposals being put forward are four 16 team divisions, a rebooted opening sectional cup, and fixture lists five months in advance to help clubs plans in terms of generating income.

All junior secretaries have been sent the details in relation to the proposals.

The current sectional format of the Ayrshire League Cup and the Central Sectional League Trophy could be replaced by a knockout competition, played in midweek at the start of the season, where clubs are seeded on the basis of their league position the previous season.

The Ayrshire League Cup would be abolished and replaced by a Western League Cup.

This would consist of all 24 Ayrshire clubs plus the eight existing central league clubs identified as new Western League clubs, namely Arthurlie, Benburb, Greenock, Renfrew, Neilston, Johnstone Burgh, St.Anthony's, and Port Glasgow. To make the numbers to 32, all remaining 32 clubs in the Central area shall play in the Central League Cup.

This motion, if agreed, would see the West Region divided into four divisions, each consisting of 16 clubs from the start of the 2018/19 season.

The top two divisions would accommodate the top 32 clubs with clubs playing across the West Region area as at present in the Superleague Premier Division and the Superleague First Division.

The bottom two divisions would be regionalised into the Western League (Ayrshire plus the Central sides mentioned above who feature in the district feeder leagues), and the Central League featuring the remaining sides in the Central League as it features at present.

The top two clubs from the new Western League and Central leagues would be promoted to the Superleague First Division.

Relegation play-offs would also be introduced to the First Division with the fifth bottom team of the First Division facing the third top team of the corresponding geographical region.

Clubs relegated from the Superleague First Division would be placed in either the Western League or Central League depending on their geography.

For the transition season of 2017/18, there would be no relegation from any division with automatic promotion of the top four clubs in the Superleague First Division into the Superleague Premier Division.

It would then be three up three down after that with a fourth placed play-off for the Premier, as opposed to the a third placed play-off at present. Due to the new league format, it would mean more home league games in terms of revenue with 15 home and 15 away games per season.

The league and cup shake-up proposal has been put forward by Whitletts Vics, and they are planning to put forward a motion to the SJFA AGM in June. So far, Annbank and Craigmark Burntonians have spoken out against the changes.
