Sunday morning saw runners gather for Largs Rotary Club’s 30th annual 10k Fun Run. Braving the rather inclement weather, more than 50 runners gathered at Barrfields Stadium, many of them bringing along supporters. First arrivals were so eager that they were waiting to register more than an hour before the 10am start, and had to wait while Rotary members set up the registration point!

By 10am Rotarian stewards in yellow tabards were stationed throughout the route, First Responders and police were in place, and water stations had been set up.

It was time for the Fun Run to begin. The runners, to the skirl of the pipes, were led to the starting point by race organiser Peter Grant. Rotary president Valerie Campbell sounded the 'hooter’ and they were off. As he has done for several years,Tommy the clown in full regalia, waving his bucket and collecting for charity.

37 minutes and 17 seconds later, the winning man, Paul Elliott, was back in the stadium followed a few minutes later by Lesley Lynn, the first lady, in a time of 41 minutes and 43 seconds. Congratulations to both of them, worthy winners of their trophies.

Soon the stadium was busy with arriving runners, each with his or her own story to tell. One lady had started the race last year but was unable to complete it because of an injured knee. This year she was determined to put that disappointment behind her, and she did. One of the male runners had taken part in the first Fun Run 30 years ago and having rested for 29 years decided it was time for another run. He was delighted that he had lost only 8 minutes from his time - pretty good for a 30 year gap!

Peter Grant said: ”Largs Rotary Club would like to thank First Responders, police, Largs Boys’ Brigade and Barrfields Stadium for helping us to make the Fun Run happen. The proceeds from the event will be used to help charities and groups in Largs and beyond.” “Congratulations to every runner, all of whom received medals and certificates. We look forward to seeing you all next year. Those who missed this chance to take part can start training now - see you in May 2015.”
