Largs Academy 3 Carrick Academy 2 Largs Academy performed an extraordinary comeback to crush Carrick Academy’s hopes, and take all the plaudits in this Under 16 Ayrshire Cup final at Dam Park, Ayr.

The teenagers showed great nerve, and desire, to stayed focussed and complete an amazing recovery from 2-0 down after looking bereft in the first 20 minutes.

However, goals from Blair Docherty, Ross Mackay, and Jay Little changed the course of the contest for a breathtaking victory.

Coach Martin Traynor said: “The boys showed great character - we had a wee chat at half-time about things we needed to do, and they passed it about well, and got their heads up, and were fantastic in the second half. Even in the last ten minutes, they showed no fear - it seemed to me only me and some of the parents that were worried, but the boys stayed calm and managed to get the victory. It was a brilliant opening goal from Blair and the pace he hit it with, I don’t think the keeper was ever going to save it.

“I think the boys’ heads went down a bit at 2-0 down, and we tried to rally them a bit, but when we scored the opening goal, and we kicked it and we looked like the only team who were going to win it. A good few passes and great team play led up to the second ball. They are a really good footballing team, and when they get a good pitch and nice surface, they can pass it about as good as any young team that I have seen.”
