Largs Gents and Ladies teams slipped and slid their way to their first victories of the tennis season in treacherous conditions.

However, some of the players used John McEnroe's old catchphrase 'You cannot be serious' in reference to the poor state of the red blaes tennis courts which are green and slippery. North Ayrshire Council have said they will treat the courts as soon as they get an extended period of dry weather.

Largs Gents recorded a victory at Douglas Park last Thursday after rolling the courts following a downpour earlier in the day. Malcolm and Lewis McAulay lost two sets to one, while Derek Ballentine and David Anton won by two sets to one. Captain Andy Auld and Peter Valerio won by a similar scoreline to achieve a narrow five sets to four victory. Largs had bounced back after a 7-2 defeat to Coylton 1 in their opening fixture.

A depleted Largs 2 Gents side obtained a draw at Troon last Thursday despite not having a full complement of players. Captain Calum Corral and Ian Armstrong won two sets to one, and experience and youth blended together well as Crawford Boyd, and 16 year old Ryan Bunyan, making his debut, netted a crucial two sets to one victory.

The Ladies 1st team of Hazel Koerner, Lesley MacLellan, Morcella Taylor (Capt), Margaret Gibson, Fiona Page and Mary Lunday lost to Troon 1 at Troon.

The Ladies 2nd team were unable to play their first match due to a heavy shower flooding the court surface. Luckily they were able to prevent Troon travelling and the match was rescheduled.

The team of Fiona Page (Capt.), Mary Lunday, Chris Reekie, Janie McKenzie, Linda Cowden and Vivien Bruce scored a convincing 7-2 victory.

Tennis club evenings open to the public take place on Monday evenings from 6.30pm at Douglas Park.
