Ashfield 1 Largs Thistle 5 Largs Thistle’s pre-season preparations hit a high five last Wednesday evening as they dismissed last year’s play-off opponents Ashfield at Saracen Park with ruthless efficiency.

Sandy MacLean’s men opened in dominant fashion and took the game to Ashfield, and it wasn’t long until they opened the scoring.

Midfielder Barri Stanton scored with a carefully placed sidefoot shot from twelve yards after a good cross to set Thistle on their way.

‘Theesel’ continued to dominate against the Glasgow men who offered little resistance - a far cry from the dramatic play-off last June.

New signing Frizzell added a quick second as he hit a low effort to the keeper’s right, and before half-time, Stanton’s shot following a free kick had to be tipped over the bar by the busy Ashfield keeper.

The second half got underway with another goal from Largs soon after kick-off.

A poor clearance at the edge of the box was picked up by Kevin Struthers who guided a shot home from the edge of the area to make it 3-0.

Five minutes later, Ashfield pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after an Alan Gilbride defensive trip in the box.

There was a flurry of substitutes in the second half, and one of the subs, Sean Pierce added some attacking flair up front, and notched two excellent late goals to put icing on the Thistle cake.

Young defender Jamieson, and Creag Little, looked very competent in defence, and Largs largely dominated against a limited Ashfield outfit, and Thistle dominated the middle of the park with another new signing in Jamie McDonald catching the eye.

Largs: Weir, Thomson, Jamieson, Little, Murray, Stanton, McDonald, Frizzell, Muir, Struthers, Lindsay. Subs: Gilbride, Pierce, Joe Cameron, Harry Donaldson, McQuade.
