Spaniard Marcos Marin, and John Byrne of West Kilbride represented Ayrshire Padel tennis as they won an inter club tournament in the capital on Saturday.

The new sport, which uses padel racquets and is big on the continent, is proving popular with players from West Kilbride, Fairlie and Largs taking part.

The sport involves a similar tennis scoring system and also uses a tennis ball, but the ball can bounce off the back and side walls, and it has an underarm serve. The indoor courts are based at Stevenston Industrial Estate.

The game is played in a doubles format, and is seen as a cross between tennis and squash, with a net separating both sets of doubles players like in tennis.

The top ten Ayrshire rankings include John Byrne at no.1, Andrew Boyle (no.5) and Brian Corrigan (no.6) of Largs, David McCulloch (no.3), Mark Henry (no.9) and Jamie Paton (no.10) of West Kilbride.

British Padel arrives in Ayrshire for both a Gold Event and Vets (+45 years) event on 4 and 5 November.
