Maybole 1 Largs Thistle 3 Thistle put the disappointment of conceding an early goal behind them as they moved up the gears against Maybole to move into third position in the Stagecoach First Division.

In the opening minutes, James Marks hit a miscued header from a corner which went back in the danger area, and after a goalmouth scramble, McKay was quickest to react to turn the ball home from two yards.

And it was a quick attack from Largs after keeper Ross Lundy launched the ball and Pierce scampered forth into the opposing penalty box, only to be chopped down as he pulled the trigger.

Glenn Thomson’s spot-kick was blocked by Grant Weir but Ciaran Friels followed up to pounce and get the ball home at the second time of asking despite another save from Weir.

Thistle’s momentum in the second half meant they were putting pressure on Maybole from the off, as Largs were seemingly getting caught out offside on repeated occasions.

But a good lifted ball into the box from Friels which picked out Marks who managed to get one-on-one with Weir, to shoot high into the roof of the net, on 55 minutes.

Largs made the game safe with ten minutes to go as sub Alan Frizzell showed a clean pair of heels to the Maybole defence on the left and launched a dangerous ball into the box, which was like a pinball as a series of chances were diverted by the agility of Weir in the Maybole goal, but sub Willie McClure made sure with a powerful diagonal drive into the bottom right hand corner.
