Double Paralympic and world champion Jonnie Peacock has criticised British Athletics’ failure to include any para athletics events in July’s World Cup event at the London Stadium.

Responding to a tweet from British Athletics announcing the schedule for the two-day event, Peacock wrote: “What an amazing line-up of Paralympic events! Oh wait…my bad, you don’t have any.”

The 24-year-old sprinter’s tweet, which included emojis and a large helping of sarcasm, was retweeted by Britain’s three-time Paralympic club throw champion Stephen Miller, who wrote: “Yeah, shame no para inclusion or equivalent. We need more world-class @ParaAthletics events more often – otherwise interest will dwindle.”

And Jack Gladman, a British middle-distance runner in the T38 class, replied to Peacock saying: “Would have loved to have a run in this if it was offered…getting back in that stadium would be magic.”

The Athletics World Cup will see the world’s eight best track and field nations – China, France, Germany, GB, Jamaica, Poland, South Africa and the United States – competing in the venue that staged the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, and last year’s world athletics and para athletics championships.

Given the huge success of those events, particularly the para athletics events, it had been hoped by many in the Paralympic community that British Athletics would do more to promote their sport and integrate events whenever possible, as will be seen at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Australia.

The national governing body, however, rejects the idea it is not doing enough to build on the momentum behind Paralympic sports in general.

In a statement released to Press Association Sport, a spokesperson said: “British Athletics are pleased to have led the way through the integration of para events into its major-event portfolio in recent years, whilst London 2017 saw both the IAAF and the World Para Athletics Championships hosted by the same city in the same year for the first time ever.

“The 2018 Indoor series saw para athletes and events included at both the Spar British Athletics Indoor Championships as well as the Muller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow – the world’s biggest Indoor Grand Prix.

“This summer, para athletics events will be included in both the Muller Anniversary Games and the Muller Grand Prix Birmingham, whilst we are continued discussions towards para athletics integration into The Meet and future Athletics World Cup formats.”
