As you would expect the month of July is a very busy one for the Largs channel.

The Scottish Sailing Institute, under the helm of David Kent, is organising the Flying Dutchman World Championships in conjunction with Largs Sailing Club (11 – 19 July).

A total of 12 nations are represented from as far afield as Australia with a total of 84 competitors. Come along and support the British sailors and see these elegant boats in action!

On 15 July the Commonwealth Baton arrives in Largs in the morning. It heads over to Cumbrae to Millport and then returns by sport Scotland RIB back to Largs. We encourage all yacht owners to come out that morning and give a good nautical welcome to the relay. For those watching on Cumbrae sportscotland are opening their doors to passers by for coffee.

On 22 July the SSI starts the ASTO Small Ships race from Greenock to Arran, the fleet then joins in the RYA Commonwealth Flotilla to Glasgow on 26 July. Safety marshalling is being carried out by SSI in conjunction with sport Scotland national centre at Cumbrae.

School holidays have started and so there is lots of young activity at the yacht haven with school groups, families and friends making good use of their boats in this lovely weather. The coastal footpath and cycle path is perfect for coming along to the Yacht Haven for ice creams, coffees and lunches and to see the action on the water! Summer fun taster days are being run by sportscotland on Cumbrae throughout the summer – special prices to allow participants to try out a variety of watersports in one session.

Largs Sailing Club Cruising Group all rendezvoused in Tobermory, Isle of Mull for a convivial evening. (see attached photo). Members have cruised as far north as Barra and Stornoway in the Hebrides, Cape Wrath and the Orkney Islands. Intrepid LSC members, Chris Nichol, Dawn MacRae and Joyce Anderson joined the Moody 54 Beta Endorphin, to sail from the Carribean to Portugal via the Azores. Last weekend the Cruising Group sailed in company to the Tarbert Seafood Festival on Loch Fyne.

Over 100 cadet members of Largs Sailing Club are in training on Thursday evenings – a great number and testament to the club of its training capabilities.

Largs Yacht Haven continues with the RYA Active Marina programme and have been working in conjuntion with Sport Scotland Cumbrae to deliver training to yacht and motor boat owners and to increase their confidence with handling their own boats. The programme has also successfully linked in with both Largs Sailing Club and Fairlie Yacht Club on their cruising musters to Tarbert and Cumbrae.
