A team of swimmers from North Ayrshire Amateur Swimming Club travelled to Edinburgh recently to compete in the Scottish Gas National Short Course Open Swimming Championships held at the Royal Commonwealth Pool.

This proved to be a very high level three day meet with many high calibre athletes in attendance including Olympians Elizabeth Simmonds, Georgia Davis, Roberto Pavoni, Craig Benson, Robbie Renwick and Caitlin McClatchey, resulting in great competition and some very fast swimming. This meet is open age group with qualifying times set in advance and is open to swimmers of all ages who attain the tough qualification times.

There was a full programme of 50 metre, 100 metre, 200 metre and 400 metre events as well as women’s 800 metre freestyle and men’s 1500 metre freestyle. The standard of swimming was superb resulting in many records being broken during the course of the meet with outstanding performances from North Ayrshire swimmers to claim their share of these records.

Jennifer King (15) of Largs had an outstanding meet, swimming in a total of eight events reaching the A final of 400 metre individual medley, the B final of 100 metre and 200 metre backstroke, 200 metre individual medley and 400 metre freestyle.

Scottish Junior Champion Jennifer was crowned Scottish Junior Champion for 400 metre and 800 metre freestyle as well setting new West District age group records for 200 and 400 metre individual medley. Danielle Joyce (17) was also in superb form, swimming in 50 metre backstroke, 50 metre and 100 metre freestyle, 50 metre breaststroke and 100 metre individual medley.
