A number of Largs swimmers impressed during a West of Scotland tournament held last weekend.

North Ayrshire Amateur Swimming Club hosted its annual 200 Swim Meet recently at Auchenharvie Leisure Centre.

This very popular meet attracted clubs from all over the West of Scotland and beyond competing in a range of events from 200 metre freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, individual medley, 400 metre freestyle and individual medley to the demanding 800 and 1500 freestyle.

The 200 metre events were swam in the age categories 10 years and under, 11 years, 12 years, 13 years, 14 years, 15 -16 years and 17 years and over, with the 400 metre, 800 metre and 1500 metre events swam as open age groups. All events were well subscribed ensuring lots of competitive opportunities over the course of this two day meet.

Fraser Kelly (10) had a fantastic meet winning gold medals in 200 metre breaststroke, 200 metre individual medley, 200 metre butterfly and 200 metre backstroke. Glen Duffy (14) of Largs was also in great form to win a gold medal for 200 metre butterfly and 200 metre freestyle and a silver medal for 200 metre individual medley. Andrew Sutherland (10) swam very well to win a gold medal for 200 metre freestyle, a silver medal for 200 metre breaststroke and 200 metre individual medley and a bronze medal for 200 metre backstroke as did Liam Cairns (15) who won a gold medal in 200 metre backstroke and a bronze medal for 400 and 1500 metre freestyle.

Conner Tarran (12) produced a great swim to win a gold medal in 200 metre individual medley as did Evan Clark (11) to win bronze in 200 metre butterfly and Rory Dickson (12) to win bronze in 200 metre backstroke. Rachel Grant (10) delivered two great swims in the 200 metre individual medley and 200 metre freestyle to win two bronze medals.

Other swimmers who competed in a variety of swims achieving some good personal best times included John Sproat (15), Ethan Judge (15), Adam Kirkwood (14), Angus Dickson (14), Jack Commins (12), Lewis Henry (13), Lyle Irvine (13), James Marshall (12), Callum Reid (11), Sophie Mc Caw (14), Rebecca Weir (12), and Abbie Freeman (12).

On the same weekend a team of senior swimmers travelled to Edinburgh where the East District was host to the second round of the Scottish Swimming Grand Prix Series. This meet is open age group with qualifying times set in advance and is open to swimmers of all ages who attain the tough qualification times. Each round follows the same format with swimmers scoring points based on performance at each meet. Prizes are rewarded for the best overall swimmers and for individual categories. There was a full programme of 50 metre, 100 metre, 200 metre and 400 metre events as well as women’s 800 metre freestyle and men’s 1500 metre freestyle. 100 and 200 metre events had both A and B finals.

Jennifer King (16) had an outstanding meet, swimming in nine events and reaching six finals including 50 metre, 100 metre and 200 metre backstroke, 200metre and 400 metre Individual Medley and 200 metre butterfly. Catriona Fowlie (14) was also in great form swimming five events delivering a string of personal best times and reaching the final of the 200 metre backstroke. Emma Scully (13) swam well in a total of five events and delivered some good personal best times. Danielle Joyce (17) swam well in 100 metre back stroke and 200 metre individual medley.

For the boys Ross Hughes (16) was in great form swimming four events and delivering good personal best times in 50 metre and 100 metre freestyle. John Wright (16) also had a great meet swimming in six events and achieving some great personal best times.
