A team of age group swimmers from North Ayrshire Amateur Swimming Club competed at the recent West District Long Course Junior Age Group Championships held at East Kilbride’s Dollan Aqua Centre. This meet took place over two days in the impressive 50 metre swimming pool, and consisted of a mixture of both sprint and distance swims, heats and finals, with the chance for individuals to race for medals and for the top six competitors to gain points for their team. Events were swum in age groups 10-11 years, 12 years and 13 years.

Emma Scully (12) had a fantastic meet, winning an impressive haul of five gold medals for 800 metre and 400 metre freestyle, 100 metre and 200 metre backstroke and 400 metre individual medley as well as two silver medals for 200 metre freestyle and 100 metre butterfly and a bronze medal for 100 metre freestyle.

Rebecca Weir (12) delivered a great 200 metre breaststroke swim to win a gold medal, while Abbie Freeman (12) swam well to reach the final of the 100 metre backstroke.

For the boys Connor Tarran (12) impressed with a silver medal in 200 metre backstroke and a bronze medal in 200 metre breaststroke and also reached the finals in 100 metre freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke and 200 metre individual medley.

Rory Dickson (12) swam well to reach the final of the 100 metre breaststroke. Other swimmers competing and achieving personal best times include Abby Kane (10), Fraser Kelly (10), Lewis Henry (12), Ben Cotter (12) and James Marshall (12).

The Dollan Aqua Centre was also the venue for the West District Long Course Senior Age Group Swimming Championships, and a group of senior swimmers from North Ayrshire travelled to East Kilbride to compete at this two day meet which took the same format as the Junior Age Groups. Events were swum in the age groups 14 years, 15 years and 16 years and over.

Catriona Fowlie (14) was in superb form to win four gold medals for 200m and 400m freestyle and 100 metre and 200 metre backstroke and a silver medal for 100 metre butterfly. Jordan Hughes (17) delivered a great 100 metre freestyle swim to pick up the gold medal.

Liam Cairns (15) swam well to win a silver medal in 100 metre backstroke and Glen Duffy (15) also swam well to win a silver medal for 100 metre butterfly as well as reaching the final of 100 metre freestyle. Adam Kirkwood (14) had a great 100 metre backstroke swim to reach the final. John Wright (16) and Craig Nisbet (15) both swam in multiple events and gained valuable points for the team.

Congratulations to senior swimmers Ross Hughes (16) and Jennifer King (15) who were invited by Scottish Swimming to represent Team Scotland at the Celtic 2014 Dual in the Pool which took place in Bangor Aurora Complex, Northern Ireland. Both swimmers were very excited to be chosen, had a fantastic weekend, delivering some great swims and helping Scotland to victory over Ireland, allowing the Scottish Youth Team to pick up the Junior Celtic Dual Meet Trophy.
