The sun was shining for the Saltire swimmers on Saturday in the charity fundraising swim from Cumbrae to Largs.

It was perhaps one of the best afternoons of the event ever given the good weather throughout, although there had been a sea breeze earlier in the afternoon, but by the time the swim got underway at 3pm, it proved to be relatively calm.

Congratulations go to the first finisher on the day who was teenager Glen Duffy of North Ayrshire Swimming Club.

Swimmers are advised to try to get their sponsor money in as quickly as possible.

Organiser John Burleigh said: “I just wanted to say a massive congratulations to all who swam on Saturday, and a massive thank you to all who helped make the event the great success that it was. Next year will be the 10th year so spread the word to ensure we make it to 100 swimmers! Also could whoever organised the weather yesterday please do the same for next year. It was like a pond all the way across.” Thanks go to all the organisers, kayakers, ribbers and safety people, and of course, the swimmers. The organisers would also like to thank Cal Mac for their sponsorship and their feather flags. An after swim party with the live band ‘Sneaky Treacle’ also took place at Largs Sailing Club on Saturday evening which was a great success in which further funds were raised for Gillian’s Saltire Appeal which provides respite accommodation for people with cancer on Largs seafront.
