There will be a touch of the West End coming to Barrfields Pavilion Theatre in a few weeks when the set goes up for the historical Scottish musical play ‘The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil.

Largs Players have hired professional set designer and builder Robin Peoples to create the scenery for the classic show, created by the famous 7:84 company 40 years ago.

Theatre world Robin is a well-known figure in the British theatre world as he has been set designer in many of the top theatres in Scotland, and for lavish West End productions. At present he has been working on the ‘highlands and islands’ set which will be erected on the floor of Barrfields’ auditorium for ‘The Cheviot...’ being staged from Thursday to Saturday, April 10-12. The show will be staged on the theatre auditorium floor, and will feature the award-winning Gaelic Choir on stage. Largs Players have opened up bookings for the limited premium table seats at £15, while balcony seats will sell at £12. All tickets can be booked by phoning Fiona Carruthers on 01475 673882 and will be on the www.ticketsource.co.uk/largsplayers website. As only 72 people can be seated at the tables each night booking will be done on a first come, first served basis.

Next week, tickets will also be on sale from the offices of Robert T Duff solicitors in Main Street, Largs between 2pm and 4pm.

Significantly, the musical play, featuring Gaelic airs and popular songs, about the Highland Clearances, by John McGrath, is celebrating its 40th anniversary in the year of the referendum. It is planned to have a bar in the auditorium to add to the atmosphere of the Scottish story, followed by some ceilidh music.

Professional producers Former Largs Players members Maggie Kinloch and Andrew McGregor, who are professional producers, will co-direct the show which will see a collaboration among the club, Gaelic Choir, Largs Youth Theatre members and local musicians, under the direction of Ryan Moir.

The Players are one of the few Scottish recipients of the annual UK BBC Performing Arts Fund.
