The concert given by the New Ayrshire Voices last Sunday in the Cathedral of The Isles lived up to all expectations.
In the first part of the programme popular choral classics (like the Easter Hymn from” Cavalleria rusticana”) were interspersed with solo songs including Schubert’s “Ave Maria” and one from “Les Miserables”.
However, the main work was Schubert’s lovely Mass in G, which is full of rhythmic interest, fine tunes and interesting harmonies. The choir directed by Raymond Bramwell gave a good performance, and to one listener at least, the Benedictus was the most moving section of the work.
Next week, by way of contrast, the cathedral will have a fresh look at the world of Scottish fiddle music with a return visit by the Alastair Savage Trio. Same place, same time - Cathedral at 3pm.
