The third concert of this season was given by Winnie Soutter, Soprano, who hails from Paisley, studied in Glasgow but has lived for many years in Sheffield and now in London where she is a renowned recitalist and taught for many years in the Purcell School.
The programme was delightful and so very varied - five songs by Purcell including the skilful "Man is for the Woman Made", followed by a very moving rendering of Schumann's Frauenliebe und Leben.
Thereafter a song cycle by Poulenc, finishing with songs by Rodrigo, then an encore of "Where'er you Walk'.
The whole programme demonstrated an exquisite voice able to meet the challenges of very different music with professionalism enhanced by charm.
Alastair Chisholm, as ever, was a superb accompanist. Indeed, much of the recital was more of a duet of two outstanding musicians. The next concert on Sunday 25 July in the Cathedral at 3pm will be given by John Kitchen, organist to the City of Edinburgh. This should be a lively and colourful recital by one of Scotland's foremost musicians.
