The Largs and Millport Weekly News has carried out a number of street interviews with the public on a number of weighty subjects but have decided to deal with something a bit frothy ... but every bit as important.

Where is the best place to go to get a good cappuccino? What is your favourite local bar for a tipple in Largs Vegas?

Followed by the burning question on everyone"s lips whether they are a resident or a visitor to the town ... everyone"s got a view... Do you think Nardini"s will be open in time for the summer? The directors of the cafe have openly admited that they face a battle to win over public perception but work has started on the restoration and re-launch of Nardini cafe which is Nardini in name only as all the original family have moved and opened up their own successful operations elsewhere at Regatta"s, the Moorings, The Green Shutter and Seaview Cafe in Wemyss BAy.

One person who believes there is a strong chance of the big Nardini"s cafe opening in the summer is Largs Community Council chairman Ian Murdoch who claimed at a recent meeting that "phenomenal work" is going on behind the scenes.

But what do you think?

Mr Robert Collins of Fairlie said: 'I like to go to the Anchor. It"s the only pub that I go in and it has a good atmosphere. There are very few of these kind of pubs left in the local area - in fact, I think this is the only one.' 'In terms of Nardini"s, I see that they are working 24 hours a day on it. It doesn"t look like it will open in time for the summer.' Patricia McCafferty of West Kilbride said: 'I think McCabes is good, particularly now that I have a baby of 16 weeks, Brooke - they are very accommodating for children and I know the staff. There is never any trouble and it is a good laugh.

I hope Nardini"s does open in the summer - it will be good for local employment for young people, and I think it offers a lot of potential. It is the reason why people come to Largs.' Julie Harvey of West Kilbride said: 'Craigmiles does a great coffee. I like there.' Yvonne Scott, owner of Silhouette underwear shop, said: 'I quite like Nardini"s at the Moorings. It is quite cozy. I quite like Lounge and Charlie Smith"s for a night out too. Oceans is also good for a dance.

'I don"t think the big Nardini"s cafe will be open for the summer. You can"t see any work from the front though work is supposed to be going on in the background. I would have thought it would be impossible to get it up and running for the summer. I might be wrong but I just don"t see it.' David Ramsay of Fairlie said: 'I have a boat at Largs marina so I like to use Regatta"s quite often and they make a good coffee and they have a good service. I also like The Bagel Basket as well.

'I am extremely disappointed by what has happened at the big Nardini"s recently. What has happened to the interior of the building - it is a listed property. This can"t be replaced. It was a major tourist attraction, Hopefully it will open in the summer but I can"t envisage it.' Marie O Brien, who is originally from Sunderland, but lives in Largs said: 'I like to go down to Fluid on Largs seafront as you have excellent views and it is a chilled out place to go, Nardini"s have been closed for over two years and it is too long.' Colleague Claire McKinnon, who works in Greggs, said: 'I like to go to McCabes because of the live bands and it is near for the railway station for me as I live in Ardrossan.' Dario Vicente of Largs said: 'Nardini"s at the Moorings is the best place to go for a coffee. I don"t think the big Nardini"s cafe will be open for this summer - not in a month of Sundays. In fact, never mind getting the 60 minute makeover, you would have to get a 60 day makeover team in to get that place open in time.' The view in general from the Largs public would appear to be that many feel it is unlikely that Nardini"s will be open in time for a June or July summer date.

You can vote if Nardini"s will be open for the summer at our website www.largsandmillportnews.com - hundreds have voted so far, and at present, only 20% think that the famous art-deco cafe on Largs seafront will be open in time.

Mr David Equi - chairman of the Italgelat consortium that bought Nardini"s out of receivership in February 2004 - stated in a national newspaper that many of the reports and rumours surrounding the future of the scenic seafront cafe were simply "ridiculous". However, Mr Equi conceded that he and his partners will need to win over local support for the "long-term well-being" of the Nardini operation.

Having been closed for more than three years, speculation centred on the possibility that Nardini"s might be lost to the nation to make way for housing, as local councillors have pushed North Ayrshire Council to issue a compulsory purchase order for the B-listed cafe.

'We realise that we have got to overcome all of that,' said Equi, who has pledged that full-time work will begin now that Italgelat has sorted out funding problems with a switch of bankers. The target is for the cafe to re-open under the Nardini"s name by the beginning of June.

'There are three partners in Italgelat, and through all of this no one has taken a penny out of Nardini"s,' Equi said. 'Because we have had a long time to think about it, we have had a chance to refine our plans, but essentially they are the same as when we first got involved.' Only time will tell, but 2008 will be, undoubtedly, a pivotal year in the history of the Nardini cafe.
