The NHS believe that the new health surgery will serve the community of Largs for 50 years and beyond as a host of services move under one roof in the new Brooksby facility which is set for a July opening date.

The long-awaited 6m project is to be christened "the Brooksby Medical and Resource Centre" and will be the second biggest health centre of its kind in Ayrshire.

With in excess of 30 consultancy rooms, the new practice will encompass both GP surgeries in Frazer Street and Aitken Street, social work, registrar, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, North Ayrshire carers, mental health and community care.

Local community groups were given a tour of the facilities this week and were impressed with the size and the scale of the development which will have an entrance to a spacious reception area, with new path links from the seafront and Brisbane Road.

Speaking to the "News", Assistant director for facilities, Tom Steele, stated that the choice of Brooksby was a sensible move in terms of access and providing an all round varied facility with a multitude of services, as opposed to the originally selected site of Clark House, which would have been very limited in comparision and had poorer access.

Mr Steele, who has been heavily involved with the Largs set-up for the past decade, said: 'I have been principally involved with changing the design concept to where we are now at Brooksby which was brought about by the closure of Brooksby House as an in-patient facility and also, in working in partnership with North Ayrshire Council to get access to car parking facilities. That in planning terms cost us a year in time but the facility we now have before us is much better than what we could have had in the original option.

'There has been a general lack of understanding of the concept and the reality or lack of reality of whether it was ever going to happen to be honest. I think people will be quite over-rawed by the scale. It is a three fold-increase in what Largs people will be used to.' The first floor of the building will include the GP practice and registrar facilities while the former Day Care hospital will be modernised, updated and expanded.
