There has been further disruption this week as the new Largs to Cumbrae ferry suffered a breakdown leaving lots of buses and car passengers waiting to get off the island over the weekend.

There were a range of sponsored walks and cycles taking place, but ferry users had to endure a long wait as the replacement ferry on Saturday evening could only carry a limited number of vehicles and people.

The new Loch Shira was introduced last year and was praised by local businesses for its capacity and helping to clear traffic quickly but in recent weeks it has been dogged with problems including a busy Bank Holiday when it was out of service.

Saturday"s breakdown resulted in further disruption for ferry passengers coming and going to the island.

A spokesperson for Cal Mac said: 'At the moment, the Loch Shira has sustained some damage to one of the units. She has gone into the dry dock, we are assessing her and hope she will be back in operation by the end of the week.' Full story in this week's Largs and Millport News.
