An elegant picture of the last Provost of Largs from the town council era added some regality to the Largs and Millport News Facebook site.
The impressive gown is on display at the opening entrance of Largs Museum every year.
Stephen Weiss asked: “Provosts used to get a lamppost planted in their front garden, didn’t they?” Donald White replied: “Correct! I remember one being in somebody’s garden in Charles Street in the 60s. Don’t know if it was ever lit!” The picture was Provost David Beattie, the last Provost of Largs in 1976, and the picture was taken by Grahame Ross.
And another popular picture by Grahame Ross to maintain the regal theme came from 1976’s Brisbane Queen festival when Shelia Wightman was bestowed with the honour. Pictured at the official Moorings dance with Sheila was Joan Doolan, Val Lundy, Janet McGavigan, Maureen Lynn Lewis, and Janette Russell.
Dorothy Crumlish aptly summed things up: “What a brilliant picture - and great memories!”
