A new, colourful offensive against dog poo has taken place in Largs.

Four members of Largs Community Council walked around five streets last Tuesday spray “painting” the offending matter in a bid to raise public awareness of the problem.

The local group had liaised with North Ayrshire Council over the initiative and the council removed the poo — circled by red dye hair-spray — on Thursday.

The group visited Main Street (both sides), Nelson Street, Boyd Street, Aitken Street and Gallowgate Street.

Patricia Perman, who chairs the local council’s environment committee, and fellow councillor, teenager Zoe McIntyre, had organised the project. They were joined by chairman Douglas Blair and volunteer Douglas McFarlane.

Cllr Perman told the News: “It’s dirty work but someone’s got to do it.” She hoped that dog owners seeing the mess would think twice about not picking up after their own pets.

“There is no excuse when there are bins for the poo to be put into. It’s one of the first things that tourists mention — they don’t like the dog poo.

“I do think it’s getting worse. Perhaps I am more aware of it because I am on the campaign. But mums with prams often can’t see it on the pavement, and people in wheelchairs have difficulty seeing it too.” This was the latest ‘poo’ initiative by the community council who have repeatedly expressed concern about the mess it causes on the street. The initiative prompted a flurry of comments on the Largs people Facebook site. Some people thought it was a waste of time, but others were supportive saying it would help highlight the serious problem of people not picking up after their dogs.
