An extensive range of improvements to Wemyss Bay Railway Station has commenced this week, and the upgrading will continue until September 2015.

Although the majority of this work will be carried out during dayshift hours of 7.30am-6pm, it is necessary for some of the work to be carried out during nightshift from 11.30pm-6am The work is set to include preparation and painting of the existing roof steelwork to both the concourse area and platform canopies. Improvements to the station and canopy roof coverings including drainage improvements, and there will be preparation and painting of the internal station buildings.

New access hatches will be installed within the platform canopies to allow future maintenance of the property.

Part of the changes includes a new roof access system to the concourse area. There will also be miscellaneous building works to improve the general appearance of the station including stone repairs, renewal of render finish to inner sea wall, overhaul of timber sash and casement windows where required.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said, “Please note that there will be a reduction in the number of parking spaces within station car park for the full duration of the project.

“These works are vital to the running of a safe railway, and are carried out while trains are not running to reduce the risks to our staff and contractors. We are contractually obliged to work, whenever possible, at times that cause the least disruption to train services. Unfortunately, this means carrying out a lot of our improvements during the night and at weekends.

“The equipment we use means some disturbance is unavoidable, but we will make every effort to minimise any unnecessary noise. Furthermore, those working on site are briefed on working responsibly in the local community.

Network Rail is working with Inverclyde Council throughout this project.

“We apologise for any inconvenience these essential works may cause. However, if you have any additional questions or concerns, please visit www.networkrail.co.uk or telephone our 24-Hour National Helpline on 08457 11 41 41.” Stuart McMillan MSP said, “I’m pleased to learn that Wemyss Bay Station is to undergo improvement works, carried out from this month onwards, in-order to further enhance the station.

“Over recent years the station, through the Adopt a Station programme and with the help of Friends of Wemyss Bay Station, has seen a positive change to the decor and layout.

“I welcome the continued commitment to make improvements at the station and look forward to seeing them first hand.”
