It was fun in the sun for Largs Thistle as they enjoyed their fourth fundraising annual cycle round Cumbrae, and raised hundreds of pounds for the football club.

All ages took part in the 11.5 mile cycle which was graced with good weather throughout, as players including Iain Fisher and Euan Lindsay wheeled their way round, along with committee members, friends and fans.

And just like the football matches, the event also attracted supporters, including Tommy Scoullar, Pat Rall and others, who made the journey overseas to cheer on the 14 cyclists pedalling the island loop.

Leaving the Viking festival and Largs behind on the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry, the ‘Theesel’ continued the carnival atmopshere over to Cumbrae.

Setting off at 1.30pm from the Garrison, the island was busy as the gold and black strips were to the fore as the 2014 Tour of Cumbrae got underway in earnest.

Thanks to ‘On Yer Bike’ shop on the island for providing bikes for some of the riders, and the event once again encouraged a feel good atmosphere.

Organiser Calum Corral said: “The long term weather forecast had suggested rain but thankfully it held off to the evening, meaning that my prayers were answered, and we were able to enjoy the cycle in marvellous conditions We could have been on the Med!

“It was a great turnout with the youngest cyclist only seven years old, and it has proved to be a real family event with players, supporters and friends all getting involved, with plenty of camaraderie and laughter in the air.” The cycle brigade enjoyed their sunshine cycle and relaxed in the Royal George Hotel beer garden on the island.

There was a good presence from the Largs and Millport Weekly News as reporter Calum was joined by deputy ‘News’ editor David Carnduff on the cycle. It was a throughly enjoyable day out and certainly put the ‘fun’ into fundraiser for ‘Theesel’.
