Reports of a fire in Skelmorlie resulted in the Largs Coastguard being called out last Tuesday.
They were called out by Belfast Coastguard to investigate a report from a member of the public on the Island of Bute of what appeared to be a fire on the shoreline, south of Skelmorlie.
The team responded immediately in their Mobile Rescue Unit, passing through the road works on the A78.
The station officer from the team had been in contact with Transport Scotland earlier in the week to inform them that emergency access through the roadworks may be required. ).
This was granted by the roadworks team. Once on scene at the Meigle, it was accertained that the fire was controlled burning by a member of the public. This was immediately reported back to Belfast Coastguard and the member of the public given safety advice. The team then returned to station and completed the relevant paperwork. This call was logged as a false alarm with good intent.
Please remember if you see something suspicious on or near the coastline dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.
Regarding last week’s article about the man overboard, Largs Coastguard would like to underline that the man overboard alert was from an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon).
