Lest we forget ... The Royal British Legion Largs branch has played an important part in respecting the memory of fallen soldiers with a series of events held in the town during the past month.

As well as co-ordinating the parade to the war memorial on Remembrance Sunday, members were at Morrison's supermarket collecting for Poppy Scotland, and a coffee morning was hosted at Dunn Memorial Hall, in support for Royal British Legion Scotland, Poppy Scotland and Soldiers Off the Street Scotland.

And on Wednesday 11 November at 10.45, members travelled on the Cal-Mac ferry, and held a small service and cast a wreath overboard in memory of the fallen at sea.

This was followed on Sunday 15 November at 1pm at Largs Cemetery, when members placed small crosses at the graveside of local veterans.

As part of the Royal British Legion Remembrance events in Largs, members attended Largs Cemetery on Sunday to honour the local fallen of WW1 and WW2.

Spokesman Stuart Rumble, who was Parade Commander on Remembrance Sunday, said: "The role of the Royal British Legion Largs branch is to support servicemen, veterans, and/or family dependents in their hour of need.

"The Largs branch is also collecting donations for PoppyScotland and Soldiers Off The Street Scotland which are official charities.

"I don't know if people realise that 18% of all rough sleepers are veterans, and that is quite a statistic when you consider there are around 1000 people sleeping rough in Scotland."

Speaking about the recent collection at Morrison's Supermarket, Stuart added: "Four generations (not related) are pictured at Morrison's collecting for Poppy Scotland Appeal.

"The Largs Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland would like to thank the generous people of Largs for their contribution."

Next week is Yuletide Night (Thursday 3 December) and The Royal British Legion Largs branch hope to participate in Santa's parade, and have a stall in the Main Street.

The Royal British Legion Largs branch was resurrected last year, and has gone from strength to strength, with a total of 38 members including former P.O.W at the River Kwai, Jack Ransom, who is 95, and John Hutchison, who was a Royal Engineer with the Paras.

Anyone can join, not just the Service personnel or Veterans - and the group already have a couple of members with no connection to services.
