Largs Campus, at £50 million the biggest ever project in the town, was approved by councillors today.
Given the scale of the project, the matter was handled by the full council, which heard about the range of positives and possible negatives in building such a large building.
And despite much of the opposition, particularly from nearby residents who have concerns about the traffic and parking around Alexander Avenue, the plans were passed unanimously.
However, as the plan does not fit in with the council's local development guidelines, the final approval requires the go ahead from the Scottish Government.
The council has also taken the unusual step of committing to monitor the school transport and nearby roads during the first year of the school to address the traffic concerns.
