One of the most fantastical stories of the old Largs Police Court in 1965 was surely the case of Bimbo the monkey going walkies.

Bimbo, c/o Frank Roche's Miniature Zoo, at Largs Bathing Station, was in the monkey house, after escaping yet again!

The 'News' reported: "Bimbo, who is so popular and gentle with children, had the misfortune to get into the bad books again last month.

"When someone opened the door to leave the zoo, Bimbo also left and ran off along the promenade,

"Three boys who had been visiting the zoo gave chase and caught up with the monkey about 20 yards away.

"One of the boys tried to catch Bimbo and it turned and bit him on the leg."

Frank Roche admitted a charge that he did allow 'a dangerous animal to be at large without it being secured by means of a rope attached to a ring through the nose, or otherwise'.

Fiscal David Lewis said there were notices in the zoo showing hands with the words 'To Animals, these are claws.' and 'Do Not Use Your Hands'.

Mr Lewis pointed out, however, that the monkey was in a position to escape, and did in fact, escape.

Provost P.M White, the magistrate, imposed a £2 fine.

The 'News' reported: "Earlier this year, Bimbo escaped from the zoo and later found sitting in a pram in Brisbane Street with a six week old baby."
