This rare Largs BB football team photo was handed in to the 'News' office by former Hearts, Queen of the South, and Largs Thistle defender Crawford Boyd, whose father appeared in the photo.

Crawford had some of the names but asked if we could delve into our archives and find any more information about the event.

Largs Boys Brigade faced off with Largs Scouts in a deciding clash in the H.M.S Cup in 1943.

The silver cup presented by the officers and ship's company of the H.M.S Largs for football competition among the youth organisations of the town was won for the second year in succession by the BB. There were a total of four teams taking part including Largs Flight Air Training Corps, and 2nd Largs BB.

The decider took place at Barrfields in front of 700 supporters, after both sides had finished level on points in the six game league, with both teams having almost an identical goal difference.

The winning side is pictured. Back row - Captain A.Simpson, Jas.Wraith, Kenneth McKenzie, Tom Taylor, Marshall McNicol, Lieut. J.Brown. Second row - S/Sgt.Malcolm Eadie (secretary), Geo Renfrew, Alan Ewing, Robert Dorman (captain), William Ormond, Crawford Boyd, Mr T.Mackay. Front Row - George Allan and Ian Stevenson.

Largs BB moved two goals ahead before half-time thanks to goals from Ormond and McNicol.

Following the match, a large gathering assembled on the field to witness the cup celebrations. Provost Lindsay, who presented the trophy to BB Captain Robert Dorman, said there was good talent in both teams, and hoped that after the war, players would get the chance to make the grade, and recalled how George Brown of Rangers fame played in the Largs BB team which won the Saltcoats and District Cup competition after the First World War.
